THE OUTDOOR CHEF IS STILL IN LUBBOCK
It’s been around a while! The Outdoor Chef opened its doors in Lubbock, Texas in 1999.
In 2017, it changed ownership to Sheryl and Tony Valentine, the 2nd owners of The Outdoor Chef. They have fun doing barbecue competitions and chili cook-offs. But mostly, they love running their small business.
The Texas Panhandle is home. Sheryl went to high school in Lubbock and Tony in Amarillo. They loved the area so much that they raised their son here.
The Valentines didn’t start out as small business entrepreneurs. Sheryl was a nurse and Tony was a manager in manufacturing engineering. Both were happy in their jobs. One day in 2016 at a barbecue competition, the original Outdoor Chef owners asked them if they would want to buy the shop.
After discussing it and really thinking about how much they enjoy BBQ, cooking, and people in general they said, “yes”!
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE MAKES OUTDOOR CHEF BUST AT THE SEAMS
When they purchased the store in May 2017, it was located at 8802 Hwy 87 (or as locals know it Tahoka Highway). It was great for a couple of years. Then it started to bust at the seams.
It didn’t take Sheryl and Tony long to realize their small barbecue shop wasn’t just a place to get BBQ basics, it was a specialty store for local Lubbock barbecue fanatics to come shop and see all the new BBQ gadgets and equipment in person!
The shop was not big enough for the daily foot traffic. They weren’t carrying enough brands and products. Since they don’t sell online, they knew the store needed to grow. That’s when the planning started for a bigger and better brick-and-mortar store for the local everyday cooks and BBQ pros.
The building process got expedited. It probably wasn’t the most opportune time to open a new store location. Still, they knew home cooking and backyard barbecues were becoming more popular among all age groups and income levels.
The family pressed on.
They met people learning to grill and some using their outdoor kitchens for the first time. Others were remodeling the outdoor kitchens in their homes.
New homes were popping up all over Lubbock. Not all would have an outdoor built-in grill area, a large percentage would want a free-standing grill! Gas, pellet, or charcoal; Sheryl and Tony knew the new store location would need to keep up with the growth.
It wasn’t easy during the pandemic. They did their part by providing great cooking products locally at great prices. But like many, Outdoor Chef struggled. They made the most of what they had (literally on hand) and made sure that when all the craziness of the pandemic was over the Outdoor Chef customers would come back.
AFTER THE PANDEMIC
Well, they made it through. The new store with nearly 5,000 square feet of shopping space opened in November 2021 at 1401 114th St. in Lubbock, Texas.
At some point during the pandemic, the store may have run out of grills and other small ticket items; they came out stronger on the other side.
Product lines expanded to offer more high-end grill brands like Blaze Grills to join the existing line which includes Memphis Pellet Grills and Twin Eagles Gas Grills among others. Even growing the number of free-standing outdoor kitchens with built-in Napoleon Gas Grills for those customers looking for a higher-end brand.
The lower-priced inventory items also grew in quantity and variety.
You name it, you can find it here. Weber Kettle Grills, Blackstone Griddles, barbecue gloves, tongs, Lodge Cast Iron, jalapeno corers, paring knives, spatulas, basting brushes, expandable bowls, and on and on.
When building the BBQ pro shop, the Valentines’ didn’t forget about helping the cooks flavor their culinary masterpieces. The barbecue seasonings, barbecue sauces, rubs, and other culinary food lines have taken on a life of their own.
Outdoor Chef customers love the wide in-store selection and our staff’s knowledge about each one. Customers really enjoy the classes that are periodically offered to show how to use all the latest products and gadgets, but especially the tasty classes involving seasoning products.
Along the way, Sheryl and Tony have continued and will commit to continue to do their thing.

You can generally find Sheryl at the register or talking with customers. Tony is in and out doing deliveries, warranty work, or helping load a new grill into a truck. While they are all experts on the grills, Chance, their son, is an excellent cook and is certified by all the grill companies. He is the go-to parts and service guy around the BBQ shop.
